Spectrogram When we perform Notey and Noisy: A Sound Science Mathemusical, we project a spectrogram of all the sound we're making: A spectrogram is a picture of sound produced by a spectrograph. We suggest that while you listen to the album of the show, you watch the spectrogram of it. You have a few options: The simplest is to use the online one, https://academo.org/articles/spectrogram with the mic enabled. Slightly more complex, but a better picture, is to upload the files, track by track, as you listen. The settings pictured are ideal for track 27, when we whistle writing (yes, now you know what the image on the back cover of the CD is!), but for the rest of the show, I suggest having the frequency set to 0-10kHz. More complex, but better quality again, is to use the spectrograph I use, by downloading Reaper DAW from https://www.reaper.fm , opening a session, dumping all 27 sound files on a single track, then clicking the FX button on the track, finding the JS: spectrograph plugin . I prefer to have the frequency curve a bit more logorithmic, so the change this got to Param / FX parameter list / Show in Track controls / frequency curve. You'll then have a knob on the track: I like it to be about 1.2. You might like to play with the other parameters too, but beware, they can be a little clunky. With both the Academo and the Reaper options, I suggests zooming in your screen so you get a bigger picture of it, if you've got a Mac, by holding control while you two-finger-swipe up. Fun times! |
