Pod
The album! ![]() ![]() 10 years on from Not Nor Mal, my new solo album, called Pod, was released on July 4th through MGM Distribution. Also available on Bandcamp (where you can download it at better that CD quality!). It features Kylie Morrigan singing and playing on nearly all the songs, and special guests Aurora Kurth and Jim Murray. Recorded and mixed by me and mastered by Myles Mumford. I will put more on this page, but in the meantime, here's the songlist, with links to the lyrics and info about the songs, and a few notes about the album. 1. Pod
2. There’s Never Been a Saint Kilda, feat. Jim Murray on Irish Button Accordion*. 3. Rakali** 4. The Magical Land of Away 5. Pinky and Moon 6. Fool 7. Hibited Habited 8. Home Sweet Homeostasis 9. Over the Hill (again) 10. Shower Samba (instrumental) 11. Got a Way With It (feat. Aurora Kurth on lead vocal and written for Dumtectives in Cirque Noir). 12. Out the Door (originally written for the fabulous Ping project, an online primary school music education site, masterminded by Ajax McKerral). 13. When You Found Me 14. Bog Reel 15. Owl *Jim Murray is best known as a guitarist (and a brilliant one at that!). He's played with two of the world's most renowned Irish Button Accordion (aka "Box") players, Sharon Shannon and Séamus Begley, so having Jim playing box on my album is not only a huge honour, but it may well be a surprise to many to hear that he truly rocks the box! **Rakali was originally a tune called Squirrels, written for the puppet show Whispering Smith, by Wishworks Puppets in UK, which only a month or so ago before making this album, I decided to put lyrics to. After a few days of writing lyrics about Squirrels with not much joy, it dawned on me that I should give it to a more local scampering critter. The recording starts with the sound of an actual Rakali, courtesy of Senka https://www.youtube.com/@meditationsbysenka972 , who was caring for it after if had been trapped in a factory in Sydney. On this album, I play nylon string guitar, bass (Steinberger and Penelope Swales gourd bass), slide trumpet, trombone, chromatic harmonica, melodica, mbira, piano, ukulele (strummed and drummed!), djembe, cymbal and bubblewrap stompbox. Everything else on this album that sounds like drums is my face (beatboxing). Kylie Morrigan plays violin, melodica, flute, Suzuki Andes. I haven't included any MPPR songs on this album, as they're all going to go on my next album, Malleable, but there is some fun timing including the Risset rhythm of Home Sweet Homeostasis, palandromic groove (and counted opening) of Pod and the 1-2-3-4-5 in the beatbox pattern and horn line of Skilda (as There's Never Been a Saint Kilda is known for short). I wrote Shower Samba in a shower at Woodford Festival, just before a rehearsal of the People's Orchestra / Walkestra. It features ukulele drumming and a frame-drum that Ky made in workshop with Wilderness Within. |
